SGA Puts Up Crap Version of Key

SGA recently put online a horrible version of The Key:

The 2006-2007 Key is now online!

To access grade distribution information click on the resources for students icon. This year, courses have been categorized alphabetically by the first letter of the course.

SGA’s venerable webmaster (Wonder if this took him the 6 hours he claimed?) put online 8 pdf’s that list the grade data by the 4-letter course identifier. Yes, you have to download 8 different pdf’s to see two semesters worth of grade data.

So this makes 3 places where you have to go to find The Key:

  • Fall 1999 through Fall 2005 can be found at the Black Tie Party website.
  • “2005 through 2006″ [SGA doesn't indicate which term] is available here.
  • Now the “2006 through 2007″ data [again no indication of which term from SGA] is online here.

Thanks, SGA, for making The Key so easy to find!

I’ve heard a rumor that another group of students is attempting to put up a better version of The Key, that might actually take into account students’ needs, usability, AND have all the data (Fall 1999 through Spring 2007) in one place. The rumor indicates that this new version of The Key will be up by drop/add, in time to actually be useful.

UGA students are ready to see all of The Key in one place. This is a project SGA should have completed a long time ago, but they never stepped up to bat for us students.

We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more about The Key!

The Key in the R&B

Two weeks ago, Josh Weiss lashed out at the SGA for failing to update The Key, the grade record previously kept up-to-date by the University. Here’s the backstory:

However, for all intensive purposes, The Key is dead.

After Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness Bob Boehmer crippled the online database of grade distributions in spring 2006 by removing professors’ names, there was an outcry by students to return The Key to its former self.

The Student Government Association, under then-President Jamie Peper, claimed to have struck a deal with the administration in which The Key would be returned, but under the control of SGA.

Several months later, The Key did pop up on the SGA web site, but has sat dormant now for the past year without updates.

Then, last week the former SGA webmaster Cory Watson responded to the criticism with an editorial of his own:

It takes one or two hours to get the text file to a point when it can be entered into the database. We are not allowed to post information for classes with less than 20 students in an effort to keep grades confidential, so those must be edited out. After that, the text file is uploaded to the database and it is a two to three hour ordeal to make it into a new page on The Key.

I am not paid hundreds of dollars per year, although I have not looked at the budget and am not aware if someone else is being paid to be the webmaster now. Mine was a one-time payment for the initial site design and setup.

It was my understanding that Cory Watson agreement with SGA was $1,000 for site design, setup, hosting, domain name, updates for a year, AND updating The Key.

So, here we are, summer 2007. And what is the status of The Key?

It is outdated, spread out over several websites, and unhelpful to students.

And what about all those campaign promises and Facebook groups about The Key? Ineffective.

End of The Ruddle Report

Paul Ruddle, student and editor of The Ruddle Report, has announced that he will stop updating the Ruddle Report (except in the case of breaking news).

It is truly sad to see Paul go, but he accomplished a lot while he posted at RR. Good luck with your new job, Paul.

In the mean time, check out UGA News for the latest news at UGA.

Where to find The Key

btp the key logoLast year the University of Georgia administration took down The Key, a grade reporting website. The Student Government Association was charged with putting The Key online, and they have failed.

As such, the editor of the Ruddle Report, Paul Ruddle, has made available an Excel file with the 1999 through 2006 Key data.

If you would like to see the older HTML version of The Key (1999 through 2005), the Black Tie Party has made it available here.

Changes around the site and updates

Hatin’ SGA was down a little while earlier while I changed a couple of things around.

You probably noticed the new look. I’m not terribly fond of it, but it is easy, clean, and it loads fast (the last theme took forever to load). If anything happens to be broken, please let me know in the comments or at the contact page.

I’ve been terribly busy this semester, so posting has been down, but I am trying to pick it back up. Hopefully the past couple of posts (and a new one about The Key!) will pique your interest.

I’m also working on a couple new projects related to the University of Georgia, so I will post updates on here when the time comes.

Otherwise, thanks for visiting the site even when I haven’t been posting too often!

SGA Lack-Of Report

The newest version of the SGA Report was just sent out to all UGA students and is available here.

I find it funny that the report was sent to students today, yet it lists events and deadlines from last week and earlier:

Applications are now available for the student member of the UGA Athletic Association Board of Directors. Applications are also available for the UGA Commencement Speaker. Applications are due by 5:00pm Friday, April 6 in Tate room 150. Interviews will be held during the week of April 9-13.

Open Constitutional Meeting April 4th 3-5pm SLC 148

I mean, can y’all not tailor this so we might actually want to read it?

Student Reps Absent

Students were not represented at the recent meeting of the University Curriculum Committee (April 2, 2007). SGA Vice President Ali Gibbons and GSA President Lindsey Scott were both absent and did not have substitutes (which are allowed).

To compare, of the 17 other members on the Committee (all professors), only one was absent without a substitute.

The minutes are available here (pdf).

PHP/MySQL help needed

If there is anyone with PHP/MySQL experience out there that would like to work on a new project with myself, hit me up. I need some help coding, and you will be paid. Thanks!

Oasis should be 24/7

So I’m not the only one that thinks OASIS should be open 24/7.

Student’s Thoughts in R&B

Sophomore Chris Chiego wrote an excellent editorial for today’s Red and Black.

He offers three main suggestions for the new SGA administration:

  1. Save the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA)
  2. Protect free expression on campus.
  3. Make sure that UGA fully funds need-based financial aid.

In regards to Chiego’s second point, he talks about UGA’s “yellow light” rating by the nonpartisan Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.  If you’re interested, you can read more about UGA’s rating here.
