Some interesting posts on websites for Senate candidates (all from the SOS Party, duh!):
[click to see the full screen shots]

This is from Brendan Wright, Senate candidate for the School of Public Health, seems to be advocating protection for students who illegally download music. Not the smartest thing to do.

Ubani Ukuku wants to SAVE the students, not SERVE the students [she had changed this as of publishing time]. In case you want more, here is her platform on the SOS webpage.

Franklin Senator candidate Jessica King wants to accomplish this (I guarantee this will not be done next year at this time. Anyone want to take bets???):

Informative, Efficient & Accessible Advising
Franklin students’ biggest complaint has been the present advising system. Advising appointments are difficult to schedule without conflicting with classes, and some feel that advisors are not fully informed for every degree track. Additionally, it is hard to contact advisors outside the mandatory per semester appointment.

As Franklin Senator I will act to increase the communication and access to information between Franklin students and their advisors, as well as promote a more efficient system. I will also seek a solution to ensure qualified and informed advisors.

Haha.

Morgan-Taylor Copper as some lofty, already accomplished goals:

Environmental Awareness:
I would like to reduce the amount of on-campus refuse caused by newspapers and other biodegradable objects by installing recycling bins across campus. It is important to give students a place to discard their newspapers, plastics, and aluminums. I initially plan to push for newspaper recycling bins in the Student Learning Center, Tate Plaza, and dormitories. After the newspaper recycling bins are installed, I will arrange for the installation of recycling receptacles suitable for biodegradable plastics and aluminums.

Morgan, ever looked around campus? There are recycling bins. And… current Senator Michael Piscotta and the South Campus Committee have already been working on this (I’m not sure if they completed their Committee goals).

And if you look on Facebook (yeah, you know you got 20 group invites this morning) you will see more humor on candidate groups.

Jamarl Glenn, SGA Senator (for the Public Health School), SGA Attorney General, and Elections Committee Chairman, is a member of the Facebook group called “I Hate SGA Elections Campaigns.” This is the description:

We are a group of people who get annoyed by all the flyers and Facebook messages talking about SGA campaigns. In addition to that, we fully disavow bonsai kittens 100%.

I love the irony of the Elections chairman apparently hating SGA elections.

And for when Senator Glenn leaves the group and then denies being a member, here’s a little proof for you:

You all may remember Jamarl Glenn, as he was a founder of the Black Tie Party, a group that wished to reform SGA and do more work for students (I am a founding member of the BTP). Jamarl ran for SPIA senator the election before last and lost. He later realized he couldn’t become a Senator in SGA without cheating, forgot the reforms he had previously advocated for, and picked up a Public Health school major to win a Senate seat that didn’t have any opposition. In case you are wondering, Glenn has yet to take any classes in the school which he represents in SGA Senate and in the University Council.

To add to Senator Glenn’s irony, in a letter to all those attempting to run in the SGA elections this year, he wrote:

No matter what the outcome of the election will be, remember the ideas and beliefs you ran for, and never give up on them. A true leader will keep to his beliefs regardless of what may come their way.

Too bad Jamarl doesn’t listen to his own advice.

For these reasons, I would like to award Senator Jamarl Glenn the Hatin’ SGA Senator of the Week Award.

Congratulations Senator Glenn, you’ve certainly earned it!

*UPDATE*

It appears that Senator Jamarl Glenn left the Facebook group after seeing he had been outed, and then thought better of it and rejoined the group. Here is a screenshot (the yesterday is referring to Monday, November 21st):

I do believe I called it when I said earlier:

And for when Senator Glenn leaves the group and then denies being a member…

Nice try, Senator Glenn. Next time, change your feed.

Thanks to reader for the headline. Senator Mark Meredith, chair of the SGA Public Relations Committee, recently responded to a post on this website.

Mr. Manly incorrectly interpreted the post, thinking the post was comparing UGASGA.com to the Washington Post. Dead wrong. We were actually comparing UGASGA.com to the blogs that keep the Washington Post accountable. The editors of the Washington Post actually think the blogs are a good thing.

Unlike the members of the Student Government Association, which hate this website with a passion. They don’t like independents that are trying to keep them accountable.

Senator Manly also told the readers of UGASGA.com that we should feel free to call him and give him a piece of our minds. So, go ahead and call him. Uh oh, wait, Mr. Manly said we could call him, but he didn’t leave us his phone number. Oops, musta forgotten, so we’ll fix that for him.

Here’s some pictures of Mr. Manly in case you see him around on campus, so you can tell him to his face. So don’t forget to tell Mr. Lack of Intelligence what you think of SGA.

UGASGA.com would like to congratulate SGA Senator Benjamin Sermons, winner of the first UGASGA Senator of the Week Award.

This popped-collar wearin’, croakie lovin’, knockoff Blackberry sportin’ SGA senator should be considered an outstanding individual.

Not only does Ben spend time to work with HERO, Tate Society (strangely all of last year’s Freshman Board are members of the Tate Society, but that’s for a different post), and be a Bible-beating Republican, he also finds the time to do excellent work for SGA.

Senator Sermons is the chairman of the External Affairs Committee with SGA, which is charged with:

The External Affairs Committee represents the student body in local, state, and national governmental affairs. This committee works closely with both the Athens-Clarke County Commission as well as the General Assembly and other elements of state government.

External Affairs has done its job so well, in fact, that Athens-Clarke County and the state General Assembly continue to ignore UGA students and our student government association.

During his term in office, Senator Sermons has managed to spend student money without hesitation, put on shitty programs, and keep SGA fashionable.

Most recently, Senator Sermons was in charge of the State Relations Day, a gigantic clusterf-©k. Senator Sermons sent out invitations to the event which noted the special guest as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Georgia House Mark Burkhalter. When Burkhalter cancelled, Sermons insisted that the Senate President Pro Tempore Eric Johnson would be attending.

Neither of these influential Georgians were present at Sermon’s State Relations Day. In fact, no one of influence was at State Relations Day. Instead, Sermon’s managed to put on what ultimately was a catered BBQ dinner for SGA.

Senator Sermon’s has continued to claim that State Relations Day was a very popular program, even though ZERO students unaffiliated with SGA showed up to the expensive program.

As SGA’s representative to the Athens-Clarke County Commission, Sermons has managed to attend zero Commission meetings. In his absence, Sermons has managed to make sure no one attended for him.

So while the State is making sure we have few professors, and ACC is making sure we are taxed to our fullest and our Greek community cannot reside off campus, Senator Sermons has done nothing for the students of UGA.

Congratulation, Senator Benjamin Sermons, first winner of the UGASGA Senator of the Week Award!
