Here is the press release regarding the new site:

NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 12, 2007

Contact: Paul Ruddle
contact AT ugakey . com
http://ugakey.com/contact.html

UGAKey.com, a website containing grades for most University of Georgia courses since 1999, is now online.

UGAKey.com contains grade distributions, listed by professor, for undergraduate courses taught at UGA from Fall 1999 to Spring 2007, not including summer sessions, labs, or sections with fewer than ten students. The website also includes plus/minus data for courses taught beginning in Fall 2006.

The website was developed by UGA students Chris Lindsey, Noah Mink and Paul Ruddle.

Developer Chris Lindsey says, “The Key has been scattered across cyberspace for over a year. It is hard to believe that other organizations on campus, especially the Student Government Association, have yet to make it easy for students to find this grade data online in a single location. Now UGAKey.com is available for all students to use and will stay available in perpetuity.”

Developer Noah Mink has always wanted to make sure The Key was available to students and previously worked through the Black Tie Party to do so. Noah says, “People like to say, ’somebody should do something.’ I got tired of this mindset, so I’m glad we were able to get this done.”

The website also includes a history of The Key since 1995.

Future plans for the website include adding a course evaluation system and including course syllabi.

UGAKey.com is not affiliated with the University of Georgia or University System of Georgia. The developers urge students to take multiple factors into consideration when planning a course of study at UGA.

Having received 2 emails in the past 2 days telling me I needed to change my MyID password, I decided to change it tonight. In case you are an over-achiever and already changed your password, here is the email:

Dear ———-,

The password for your MyID “————” will expire in 3 days.

To ensure that you can continue to log into UGA services that require a
MyID for access, you must go to http://myid.uga.edu and click “Change Your
Password” to change your current password.

Please do not respond to this email as it is an automated reminder only.

If you experience problems please call the EITS Helpdesk at 706.542.3106

Sincerely,

Enterprise Information Technology Services

[note, one email said "will expire in 5 days," while this one said "will expire in 3 days."]

I went to the website to go ahead and get this over with. I thought this would just take a second (I only added a “special character” to the end of my already secure password). Wrong.

You have to invent 2 ’security’ questions and answer them, and then answer 3 stock ’security’ questions. Might I add that one of the ’suggested’ security questions was “What is your favorite day of the week?” Also, EITS, if you read this, the answers to the 5 security questions should not need to be case sensitive- there are 5 questions.
And a question for anyone out there reading this, could your two invented security questions be answered by looking at your Facebook profile? Mine could (at first), and I bet some people’s will, so why have these 2 questions at all?

After coming up with my security questions and answering the other 3 (it took me a while to remember my first teacher’s name), I then had to create my “secure” password. I accidentally messed up the script on the password approval page for a minute because I was testing out how “secure” the password really had to be.

Then I was greeted with this message:

Your password is being updated. This process may take several minutes, please be patient.

And then this warning…

Your password has been updated. It will take up to 15 minutes for this to take effect.

Ha! What nonsense. And all this so later some spyware can steal my Social Security number.

Public service announcement from Hatin’ SGA: change your MyID password by February 1 here.

The SOS Party has posted their platform here (warning, pdf). I’ll be putting my thoughts about it up later, but here is a reader submitted critique of the platform:

Advocacy, Advocacy, Advocacy

“Advocacy” has become the buzzword around SGA now as it is preferable to “accomplishing nothing.” Failed to slow or even question the plus/minus grading changeover? You “advocated” for the students! Failed to get more funding for SPIA? Nevermind, you “advocated” for it!

Having Senators present in their schools is a good idea, but you have to do things for the students after listening to their concerns. Otherwise, what’s the point in having them?

Statistical polling by face-to-face polling? That’s about as un-scientific as it gets. Nobody in the administration will care about anything done by a poll conducted in such as manner. Get some political science skills and figure out a way to use SGA’s manpower and money to actually do a correct poll.

Media Outlets? Does anyone watch channel 15? I agree that this is an asset that could be better utilized, but what’s SGA supposed to do about it?

Organization Outreach

Now why would any organization want to send a representative to a meeting that will never accomplish anything? I guarantee you this will be a complete failure unless SGA proves it’s more powerful than a one-day old panda.

Who decides something’s a “major campus organization”? And why would any of them, other than the ones run by SGA cronies, want to talk to the SGA people?

Good idea to get SGA more involved in residence halls and the freshmen experience. Now, try to expand that outreach beyond the select few “insiders” inducted into the SGA environs each year.

If this constitution passes, then you’ll have more sinecures for your cronies in the judicial branch. I challenge you to appoint someone with a spine- say, the creator of this website- to that branch. Then things might actually get done.

Good idea for more records.

I eagerly await the results of the medical amnesty policy.

And a 24-hour SLC as well.

Campus initiatives

You want to take up valuable instructional space with SGA LOUNGES? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Put the SGA people in front of a desk in the entranceway and offer free food for feedback. That’s all you need to do.

Good idea for a completely wireless campus.

Good idea for more safe rides program.

Umm okay, go ahead and try to highlight schools across campus… see if anyone cares.

Now I looked long and hard to find the platforms for the senators from my school, SPIA, but on both their facebook groups and on the website I could find nothing other than this: Personal Platform:
• increase communication throughout SPIA
• increase class availability
• internships with professors in SPIA

Good job with the specifics here. I really enjoy knowing that my future SPIA senators have a plan for the future.

Congrats SOS- maybe next year all we’ll need is a president and vice president since all these initiatives are going to be so successful!

In case you haven’t seen it, SGA Press Secretary Jeremiah Johnson (frequent commenter) started a Facebook group called “Keep SGA!” with the hopes of convincing you to vote to keep SGA on campus.

More like conniving students into believing lies:

Without SGA this year…
- There’d be no online Key

Dead wrong!

The Black Tie Party saved the Key. The Key is not just this year’s copy of the grade records, it is all of the ones from the past. That is why it means so much to students! So we can look at all those records and see a professor’s grading records. And SGA didn’t nothing to save those. It was the effort of Noah Mink to save those pages because if he had not had the forethought, all those records would be gone for eternity. Look for yourself, as the SGA website even links to the Black Tie Party page with the Key records.

SGA hasn’t even put the fall semester grades up!

- The parking on the IM Fields might have gone unchallenged

Wrong!

It was members of the Intramural teams that brought this issue up at Open Mic with Mike. They challenged! You helped, but if SGA wasn’t around, they still would have challenged. Your statement is false!

- Efforts for a student bill of rights and a medical amnesty policy would be non-existent

True, but…

You haven’t gotten a student bill of rights or a medical amnesty policy approved! These terms sound nice, but until they are codified and put into action, they are merely placeholders in SGA’s book of achievements!

- We’d have no Fall Break

True, but…

SGA let our Fall Break get cut. Fall Break got cut in half. SGA saved half of Fall Break. Thanks, guys.

This year saw the budget process overhauled

True, but…

New rules don’t work if they aren’t enforced. There was an SGA event this week (!!!) that didn’t meet the new SGA budget regulations and it was allowed to continue!

and the election process reformed

True, but…

It apparently didn’t work that well, because students have NO CHOICE in their representation this year!

Lastly…

To increase accessability, office hours for senators and appointed positions were increased

But… WRONG!

Office hours were not increased. Even if they were, where do you find your Senator’s office hours? Where is the SGA handbook on how to find your representatives? And why don’t your representatives, who want your vote soo badly that they make Facebook groups and events, come search out their constituents?

If you want our votes, represent us! Talk to us! Come search us out, make yourself known, don’t sit in an office in the basement of Tate doing your homework during your “office hours” and tell us SGA deserves a chance. No, you do none of this. You are the ones that are causing our representation to crumble more and more every day.

You might notice a few changes today – well, hopefully you at least notice all the color changes. I am experimenting with a new theme, and decided to go live with it today. If you notice any difficulties with page load (site is taking too long to load – the major problem I am having right now), let me know in the comments or on the contact page. I am working on changing the main text color in the posts (I know the dark grey on black is hard to read), and putting the rss feeds and other links back onto the sidebar.

Please let me know, in the comments on on the contact page, whether or not you like the new theme.
Thanks for the patience while I get this working!

*Update*
Text color is changed, and the Meta (Rss feeds and such) are back on the sidebar on the right. Now, if I can change the text of my comments.

*Update 2*
It seems that post of the page load problem (it is taking a little while to load the website) is a network problem, so hopefully that will be getting better shortly.

*Update 3 [December 27]*
You can now see which comments are mine! Technical problem on the site is now fixed, but for an example of the now fixed problem, look at my comment here. Also, you can now subscribe to Hatin’ SGA by email by clicking on the link in the Meta section of the sidebar (on the right).

*Update 4 [December 29]*
The text in the blockquotes is now a whiter shade of grey, so it is a bit more readable. If you have any further problems with readability, hit the comments. Thanks for the patience!
