For all the freshmen at UGA (and any state institution) who thought that their tuition was going to be fixed for their time here, think again. The Athens-Banner Herald is reporting that the Board of Regents has put this plan on hold.

They are reporting that it won’t cost the University System too much more, but no word in the article of how much more it will cost students (who thought they would pay the same during their four year stay at state institutions).

I would be rather upset if I came to UGA (or Tech, or anywhere public in Georgia) under the assumption that my tuition was going to hold steady for four years, only to find out 6 months later that it might increase.

For some background info on the four-year, fixed tuition plan, see here and here.

SGA Presidential candidate Katy Bowers was quoted (warning, free registration required) in the Athens Banner-Herald yesterday. The article is about UGA President Michael Adams’ State of the University address.

UGA student government leader Kathryn Bowers said that while UGA is doing a fine job providing a great education to Georgia’s top students, it has fallen far short of its land grant mission by excluding the traditional agriculture students and favoring programs that serve a more urban and professional demographic.

“In that way, we’re not serving the needs of the state,” Bowers said. “I think we need a balance… there’s a solution in there somewhere.”

I believe when Senator Bowers says “land grant mission,” she is referring to the UGA Charter. If you wish to read the Charter, click here. Has Senator Bowers read the Charter?

Maybe she is referring to the “UGA Mission” that is on the UGA website. If so, that ‘mission’ is an excerpt from a book. Even if she is referring to this, agriculture and environmental sciences are listed after arts, humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, and physical sciences.

I’m also curious, how and where are agriculture students excluded?

“There’s a solution in there somewhere.” In where?

Bowers also says the University is not serving the needs of the state. I’m not sure how well Bowers understands the needs of the State of Georgia. Bowers is from (and still a resident of, I do believe) the state of Tennessee.
