Demosthenian to Hold Debate on SGA

On January 18th (Thursday, 7pm), the Demosthenian Literary Society will debate the merits of abolishing the UGA Student Government Association. The resolution will be:

Be It Resolved: The Student Government Association of the University of Georgia should continue to operate.

This resolution will be presented by someone in SGA, possibly even President Jamie Peper or Vice President Matthew Suber.

As I understand it, the Demosthenian Literary Society will not be supporting either side of the issue, but its members are allowed to speak for any side. Guests are welcome to speak.

I think this might be one of the few times SGA allows a decent debate about itself. The Demosthenians will logically and honestly debate this issue, so this will be quite enlightening. It is just hard to believe that Peper or Suber will go along with this, because they will most likely get slaughtered, and hopefully it will make the Red and Black.

But remember, it will be Demosthenian, not SGA, running this debate. That guarantees the debate will be fair.

Matt Suber is too big of a pussy to show up for this. He’d get his ass handed to him. I’d like to see one of those obnoxious sophomores who are running for President/Vice President step up and go debate.

Sure to be a fair debate? Half the Demosthenians are part of the “Red Dog Party” (created by Josh Weiss) who have the sole purpose of abolishing SGA. I can’t imagine how this debate could possibly be fair.

    Aaron,

Have you ever witnessed a Demosthenian debate? You might want to hold off with your baseless generalizations until you see the logic involved. But then again, you don’t seem to understand logic too well.

    Aaron,

There are a lot of inaccuracies in your comment.

First, I did not found the Red Dog Party, Steve Dowell and Darren Earl did.
Second, the Red Dog Party ceased to exist sometime last semester due to inactivity by nearly everyone involved. I have not considered myself a member since around last April and there hasn’t been any party activity since earlier than that.
Third, none of the presiding officers in Demosthenian who run the meeting are or were ever members of Red Dog. This is not to say they may not dislike SGA, but they were not part of the organization. In fact, the only current officer at all who had some kind of involvement is Steve Dowell himself who is the custodian.

Instead of prejudging Demosthenian’s efforts to allow an open dialogue about student government, I’d suggest you come to the meeting and see for yourself that Demosthenian is about discourse and not one sided bashing.

To suggest that members of Demosthenian may have an opinion about something is like calling the kettle black. Generally speaking, people who don’t have strong opinions would probably avoid joining a debate society.

Aaron, I hope that you do come to see for yourself that your claims are unjust and without factual merit.

After all, I highly doubt that Matt and Jamie would bother doing the event with us if they didn’t think we would give them a fair chance to get out their message.

    Sincerely,
    Josh Weiss
